Explaining a symptom is hard enough. Explaining it in a second language, and then trying to follow what the optometrist tells you, can be much harder. At Mosspark Opticians, you can have your whole appointment in English, Urdu or Punjabi. If you have been looking for an Urdu and Punjabi speaking optician in Glasgow, this is what that means in practice.
An eye examination depends on conversation. We need to understand exactly what you are noticing: whether your vision is blurred all the time or only sometimes, whether your eye is painful or just uncomfortable, and whether anyone in your family has had glaucoma. You need to understand what we have found and what happens next.
When that conversation happens in your own language, small but important details are not lost. Many patients tell us they understand their eye condition properly for the first time.
Many of the conditions above cause no symptoms in their early stages. Good vision does not mean healthy eyes. Regular examinations are how problems are caught while they are easiest to manage.
On the NHS in Scotland, eye examinations are free for everyone. Most adults aged 16 to 59 can have one every two years, and under-16s and over-60s every year. You may be offered checks more often if you have diabetes, glaucoma or a family history of glaucoma. Find out more about free NHS eye tests in Scotland.
Your appointment follows the same careful steps as every eye examination at Mosspark. We start by talking about your eyes, your general health and any medications. We then check your vision and prescription, how your eyes work together, and the health of the front and back of your eyes. At the end, we explain everything we have found, in whichever language you are most comfortable with, and answer your questions.
If you need glasses, we help you choose, and explain the costs and any NHS voucher you are entitled to before anything is ordered.
We see patients of every age, from young children having their first eye test to grandparents. If an older relative cannot get to the practice on their own because of their health, they may qualify for an NHS home eye test, and we can carry that out in Urdu or Punjabi too.
