
“Should I just get reactions lenses so I don’t need sunglasses?” is one of the most common dispensing questions we get. And the honest answer is: it depends on what you actually need them for. Photochromic lenses are brilliant for some people and frustrating for others – and usually the difference comes down to one or two specific use cases that nobody mentioned before they bought them.
Photochromic lenses (you’ll hear them called Transitions, Reactions, or just “light-adaptive”) contain molecules that darken when exposed to UV light and return to clear when the UV drops. They’re built into the lens itself, not a coating, and they work in both prescription and non-prescription lenses. The best modern photochromics go from virtually clear indoors to a genuine sunglass-dark outside, and back again in a few minutes.
Behind the Windscreen
This is the big one. Modern car windscreens block most UV light, which means photochromic lenses barely darken while you’re driving. You’re sitting in bright sun, squinting, and your “automatic sunglasses” aren’t doing anything because the UV that triggers them isn’t reaching the lenses. Some newer photochromic designs (like Transitions XTRActive) respond to visible light as well, which helps somewhat, but if driving is your primary use case, a dedicated pair of polarised prescription sunglasses will still outperform them.

Speed of Change
Modern photochromics are faster than they used to be, but they still take a minute or two to fully darken and several minutes to fully clear. If you walk into a dimly lit pub from bright sunshine, you’ll be waiting for them to lighten. For most people this is mildly annoying rather than a dealbreaker, but it’s worth knowing about.
Temperature Sensitivity
Photochromic lenses darken more in cold conditions and less in hot ones. A Scottish winter? They’ll go very dark. A beach holiday in 35°C heat? Noticeably less so. It’s a property of the photochromic chemistry, and all brands are affected to some degree.

It’s not an either/or decision – and with reglazing options available, you can sometimes fit photochromic or polarised lenses into existing frames rather than buying new ones.
