When you need an eye test or new glasses in Glasgow, the choice usually comes down to a familiar high-street chain like Specsavers or an independent optician.
I’ll be upfront: I’m not neutral. I’m Rahillah Moghul, the Independent Prescribing optometrist who owns Mosspark Opticians, an independent practice in Bellahouston. But I spent nearly 20 years working in high-street practices before opening Mosspark, so I’ve seen both sides from the inside. The honest answer is that it depends on what you need. Chains do some things genuinely well, and independents do other things better.
Specsavers is one of the UK’s biggest optical chains, and there are real reasons people choose it:
If your eyes are healthy, your prescription is straightforward and convenience matters most, a chain can be a perfectly sensible choice.
Every eye test at Mosspark, NHS or private, is a 45-minute eye examination. I carry out the whole test myself, rather than passing you between staff, and there is time to go through your results properly. In a busy chain, appointment lengths vary by branch, so it’s worth asking when you book.
As an Independent Prescribing optometrist, I can diagnose and treat many eye problems in the practice, such as red eye, infections and allergies, and prescribe medication. That often means you don’t need a separate GP appointment. Here’s what to do when something’s wrong with your eye.
Some of the services people most often come to us for are specialist ones:
Some chain branches offer some of these services too, so if you need one, ask your local branch what’s available.
Rather than stocking a large own-brand range, we choose independent and designer frames that you’re unlikely to see on everyone else, and we help you choose a shape that suits your face.
We offer consultations in English, Urdu and Punjabi. If someone in your family can’t get to the practice on their own, we also provide NHS eye tests at home across Glasgow Southside. And if you’re new to varifocals, our 30-day varifocal guarantee gives you time to adapt.
The differences usually come down to time, continuity, and curation — and they matter more than people expect.
Many chain appointments are scheduled in 15–20 minute slots. At Mosspark, our standard eye examination is 45 minutes. That extra time isn’t padding — it allows for a more detailed look at your eye health, a proper conversation about your lifestyle, and time to answer your questions without feeling hurried.
In a large branch, you might see a different optometrist each visit. With an independent, you tend to build a relationship with one person who knows your history. That continuity makes it easier to spot subtle changes over time — which matters for conditions like glaucoma that develop slowly.
Chains stock high volumes of popular ranges. Independents like us hand-pick a smaller, more distinctive frame collection you’re less likely to see on everyone else — often from independent eyewear designers. If you want glasses with a bit more character, that curation is the difference.
Many independents invest in services beyond the basics — such as dry eye and blepharitis treatment, myopia management for children, and advanced retinal imaging. These aren’t always available at every high-street branch.

Not for the eye test. In Scotland, NHS eye tests are free for everyone who ordinarily lives in the UK, at a chain or an independent. You can check who qualifies for a free eye test.
For glasses, it depends on what you choose. If you want the cheapest possible pair, a chain’s budget range is hard to beat. If you want better lenses or frames that last, the difference is often smaller than people expect, and we offer 2nd pair half price. NHS glasses vouchers work the same way at both.
A chain may suit you best if you want late or weekend appointments, you move around a lot, or you just want a simple, low-cost pair of glasses and your eyes are healthy.
An independent may suit you best if you want more time with your optometrist, you’d like to see the same person each visit, you have dry eyes, a child whose short-sightedness is getting worse, a family history of glaucoma or another condition that needs monitoring, or you want frames that stand out.
We’re a family-run, independent optician in Bellahouston, serving Glasgow’s Southside — including Govan, Partick, Cardonald, Shawlands, and the wider area. Our approach is built around taking time with every patient, from a child’s first eye test to specialist contact lens fittings and ongoing eye health monitoring.
You can read more about how and why we work the way we do on our philosophy page. And because we offer the free NHS eye test like everyone else, choosing independent care doesn’t have to mean paying more for your examination.

Not necessarily. NHS eye tests are free in Scotland at both, and NHS glasses vouchers can be used at both. The cost of glasses depends on the frames and lenses you choose. Chains are strong on budget multi-buy deals, while independents tend to focus on a curated frame range and lens quality. It is worth asking for a quote from each.
Yes. Every optometrist in the UK, at a chain or an independent, must be registered with the General Optical Council and meet the same professional standards. Some optometrists, in either setting, hold extra qualifications such as Independent Prescribing, which allows them to prescribe medication for eye conditions.
The NHS funds the same examination wherever you go in Scotland, and you don't lose your entitlement by choosing an independent. What differs is how the appointment is run. At Mosspark every eye test, NHS or private, is 45 minutes with the same optometrist.
Yes, at any time and without needing anyone's permission. Just book an appointment. It helps to bring your current glasses and your last prescription if you have it.
Many can. At Mosspark, as an Independent Prescribing optometrist, I can diagnose and treat conditions such as red eye, infections and allergies, including prescribing medication, without you needing to see your GP first.
