It should be simple: you need an eye test, you book an eye test. But the number of people who tell me they put it off for months because they weren’t sure whether they needed a referral, whether it was free, or what to say when they called – it’s more than you’d think. So here’s the whole process, start to finish.
In Scotland, this one’s easy: every Scottish resident is entitled to a free NHS eye examination, regardless of age, income, or employment status. No voucher needed, no means testing, no GP referral. If you live in Scotland, you qualify. Our full guide to free NHS eye tests in Scotland covers the details, but the short version is: you don’t need to check – you’re eligible.
The NHS test covers a full clinical examination – visual acuity, prescription, eye health checks, and glaucoma screening. It’s thorough and it’s free. A private examination offers the same core checks but typically includes additional technology (like OCT retinal imaging), longer appointment slots, and more time for discussion. At Mosspark, both NHS and private patients get the full 45-minute appointment – the difference is in the additional imaging and technology included.
You don’t need to choose in advance Call us, tell us it’s been a while (or it’s your first time), and we’ll talk through which option suits you. You don’t need to arrive knowing whether you want NHS or private – we’ll explain the difference and help you decide. |
None of this needs to be exact – we’re not going to quiz you. It just helps us book the right appointment length and make sure the right equipment is ready when you arrive.
You can book by calling us on 0141 427 4040 or through our website. We’ll find a time that works and confirm everything. If you haven’t been before, we’ll ask a few extra questions to set up your record – it takes a couple of minutes, nothing more.
Turn up five minutes early if it’s your first visit so we can finish any paperwork. The appointment itself runs 30–45 minutes – our full guide to how long an eye test takes explains what fills that time and why it matters. After the examination, we’ll talk through everything we found, answer your questions, and if you need glasses, our dispensing team will help you find frames that actually suit you.
If you’ve never had an eye test, or it’s been years, the single most important thing is just booking it. Don’t wait for symptoms, don’t worry about what to expect, don’t assume your eyes are fine because you can see well enough. A proper examination checks the health of your eyes, not just how clearly you see – and plenty of conditions cause no symptoms at all until damage is done.
