Sports Vision: How Your Eyes Affect Performance and Why Athletes Should Get Tested

Anyone who cycles in Glasgow in ordinary glasses knows the routine. You set off, it’s fine. Ten minutes in you stop at lights, the airflow stops, and your lenses fog completely. Then it starts spitting, and now you’re riding through a windscreen nobody’s wiping. Add a bit of grit off the road coming in at the sides, and you’re squinting your way along the Clyde path with one eye shut.

It doesn’t have to be like that. Prescription cycling glasses exist, they work well, and there are more options than most riders realise.

Why normal glasses struggle on a bike

Everyday spectacles are designed for someone standing upright looking ahead. On a bike, your head is tipped forward and you’re looking up through the top edge of the lens, which is often exactly where you run out of frame. Add wind coming in around the sides, rain on a flat lens with no coating designed to shed it, and a frame that slips down your nose every time you hit a pothole on Paisley Road West, and you’ve got a setup working against you.

Cycling-specific frames solve this with a wrapped shape that follows the curve of your face, a higher lens position, grippy nose and temple pads that hold better when you’re sweating, and lens materials built for impact.

The two ways to get your prescription into cycling glasses

This is the bit worth understanding before you spend anything, because the two routes suit different riders and different prescriptions.

A prescription insert is a small carrier holding your lenses that clips in behind the main shield lens. It’s the cheaper route, it works with almost any frame, and it lets you swap the outer lens for different light conditions – clear for a dark December commute, tinted for a summer run through Pollok Park. The downsides are a smaller field of corrected vision, since the insert is physically smaller than the shield, and two surfaces instead of one, which means more scope for fogging. An anti-fog coating is close to essential.

Direct glazing puts your prescription into the frame’s own lenses. Optically it’s better – a wider corrected field, one surface, cleaner appearance. It costs more, and there’s a real limit on prescription strength. The steeply curved wrap of a cycling frame introduces distortion, and beyond a certain prescription the lens simply can’t be made to work in that shape without giving you a headache. Where that limit sits varies, which is why this needs looking at properly rather than guessing from a website.

Lens choices that matter in Scottish light

Glasgow gives you flat grey light for much of the year and then a bright low sun that sits right in your eyeline on a winter afternoon. A few things are worth knowing.

  • Photochromic lenses darken and lighten with conditions. For riders who go out year-round without wanting to carry spares, these are usually the sensible default.
  • Polarised lenses cut glare off wet road surfaces, which is genuinely useful here. One caveat: they can make some bike computer and phone screens hard to read at certain angles.
  • Polycarbonate is the standard for sports lenses because of its impact resistance. If a stone comes off a car tyre, this is the material you want in front of your eye.
  • UV protection matters even under cloud. Cumulative UV exposure contributes to cataract and other long-term eye changes, and cyclists spend a lot of hours outdoors.
  • Anti-fog treatment is worth every penny in a Scottish winter, particularly with an insert setup.

Eye protection isn't only about seeing

As an optometrist I see the other side of cycling too. Grit, insects, low branches on the towpath and road spray all end up in cyclists’ eyes, and a corneal abrasion from a piece of road debris is a genuinely miserable few days. A wrapped sports lens is doing a protective job as well as a corrective one, and that’s true whether you’re racing or riding to work.
