How Often Should You Get an Eye Test in Glasgow?

Share :

Most people only think about booking an eye test when something feels wrong – a bit of blur, headaches at the end of the day, or trouble reading road signs at night. By then, you’ve often left it longer than you should. At our practice in Glasgow’s Southside, we regularly meet patients who haven’t had their eyes checked in five, eight, even ten years.

So how often should you really have an eye test in Glasgow? The short answer is at least every two years – and more often for some people. Here’s how to know what’s right for you.

How Often Should You Really Have an Eye Test?

Your eyes are good at compensating, so changes can creep up gradually. Don’t wait for your next routine appointment if you notice any of the following:

  • Blurred or double vision, near or far
  • Frequent headaches or eye strain, especially after screen work
  • Difficulty seeing while driving at night, or glare from headlights
  • Holding your phone or a book further away to focus
  • A child squinting, sitting close to the TV or rubbing their eyes
  • Flashes, floaters or any sudden change in vision (seek same-day advice)

Signs You Shouldn't Wait Two Years

While everyone is covered, some groups are entitled to be seen more often, or to extra support. You can usually be seen every year if you are:

  • Under 16, or 16–18 and in full-time education
  • Aged 60 or over
  • Living with diabetes or glaucoma
  • Aged 40 or over with a close relative who has glaucoma
  • Registered as partially sighted or blind
  • Advised to by your optometrist for a clinical reason

Why Regular Eye Tests Matter Beyond Your Vision

An eye test isn’t only about whether you need glasses. It’s one of the most useful health checks you can have. Because the eye is the only place a clinician can see your blood vessels and optic nerve directly, a routine examination can reveal early signs of glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions – often before you notice any symptoms.

At Mosspark we use advanced OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) retinal imaging to look beneath the surface of the retina, helping us detect conditions such as glaucoma years before they would otherwise become apparent.

What Happens During an Eye Test at Mosspark

We practise what we call “Slow Optometry.” Where many high-street chains run 15-minute slots, our standard eye examination lasts up to 45 minutes with the same experienced optometrist throughout – no rushing, no being passed between staff. We check your vision and prescription, examine the health of your eyes inside and out, measure your eye pressures and take the time to explain what we find in plain language.

Is the Eye Test Free in Glasgow?

For most people, yes. Under NHS Scotland, routine eye examinations are funded for all residents – you don’t need to be in a special category to qualify. We’ll confirm your eligibility when you book. If you’d like to understand exactly who’s covered, see our guide to free NHS eye tests in Glasgow.

Why Choose Mosspark Opticians?

We’re an independent optician in Glasgow’s Southside with a simple belief: the standard of care shouldn’t depend on how your appointment is funded. NHS or private, you’ll get the same unhurried 45-minute examination, the same advanced OCT imaging and the same optometrist who takes the time to explain everything clearly.
